The School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design has announced its new "Intermedia Initiative" under the directorship of Associate Professor Coco Fusco. This new area of research and public programming will explore developments in the fields of New Genres and New Media and will foster increased cross-disciplinary exchange within Parsons. The Intermedia Initiative
will involve faculty, visiting scholars and guest artists whose work engages with photography, time based media, digital arts, contemporary art history and visual culture studies. During its first
year, the Intermedia Initiative will sponsor a weekly interdisciplinary artists lecture series, a new transdisciplinary graduate seminar featuring a wide range of guest scholars, a
symposium on Performance and Politics in Guatemala, and new undergraduate and graduate studio courses. The principle goal of the Intermedia Initiative will be foment cross-disciplinary exchange
among faculty, students and guests and to expand the possibilities
for interdisciplinary art practices at Parsons and The New School.
Fusco will also convene a working group of faculty from AMT to
explore possibilities for expanding interdisciplinary curricular
offerings and degree offerings in the future.
"Parsons is pleased that Associate Professor Coco Fusco has agreed to
become Director of Intermedia Initiatives," said Sven Travis, Dean of
the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons. "With the new
Intermedia Initative, AMT embraces the increasingly interdisciplinary
orientation of all schools at Parsons and The New School. We are lucky
to have an individual such as Coco already in our mids. I fully
support her leadership of Intermedia Initiatives. I could not imaginesomeone more dynamic and well suited to lead this charge. During her
year as Chair of Fine Arts, that program underwent a notable increase
in its faculty, an important diversification of curricular offerings
in time-based media, and a dramatic rise in MFA student enrollment.
She will no doubt bring the same energy and creative thinking to this
new initiative."
For over twenty years, Professor Fusco's work as an artist, writer
and teacher has bridged many disciplines. She is a recent recipient
of a Faculty Development Fund Grant from The New School for the
creation of a new project in collaboration with professors Michelle
Materre Media Studies and Veronica Lawlor in Illustration. As part of
her duties as Chair of Parsons Fine Arts Department, Fusco initiated
many of the projects that will serve as the foundation for Intermedia
Initiatives.
Fusco herself is enthusiastic about the possibilities. "The most
exciting changes in contemporary art of the past thirty years have
come from the increasing diversity of the field, its locations, its
manifestations and its participants. Art is now understood and
celebrated as an interdisciplinary endeavor occurring on a global
scale. Nonetheless, too many art schools remain wedded to structures
that isolate disciplines rather than bringing them into dialogue. I
am very pleased that such critical transformations in art can become
palpable through the Intermedia Initiative at Parsons."
About Parsons The New School for Design

Deadline for registration: Monday, July 20th, 2009
Out of The Blue is an international symposium organized by The Blue House (Het Blauwe Huis) focusing on three main navigational strands in understanding experimental communities: Instant Urbanism, Hospitality and Accelerated History.
Out of The Blue is as a discursive forum where a number of investigative questions will be articulated via workshops, intense dialogues, in-conversations, study sessions, public deliberation plenaries, performances, and discussions with a number of guests on stage.
The initiator and main organizer is The Blue House, a four-year durational project initiated in IJburg, a new city extension of Amsterdam. IJburg is a major new urban district being developed on a cluster of man-made islands to the east of Amsterdam city centre. The whole development is governed by a highly detailed plan, the implementation of which is strictly regulated.
In 2005, artist Jeanne van Heeswijk arranged for a large villa in housing 'Block 35' to be taken off the private market and be re-designated as a space for community research, artistic production and cultural activities. In cooperation with Dennis Kaspori and Hervé Paraponaris The Blue House has acted as a centre for artistic and cultural production and research into what happens when such a radical approach to urban planning and community development is employed.
Out of The Blue will take place in the future 'Activity Centre' on the island presently under construction. The still concrete structure will be used as a temporal public faculty, a 50-room motel and an amphitheatre. The design is made by Maartje Dros and Francois Lombarts.
The curator of the symposium is Yane Calovski. It is part of Blue House project 'Parade of Urbanism' from Jeanne van Heeswijk and Dennis Kaspori in collaboration with Floris van Heynsbergen.
Blue House program content participants:
INSTANT URBAISM
Howard Chan, m7red (Mauricio Corbalán and Pio Torroja), Rudy J. Luijters, Jeanne van Heeswijk and Dennis Kaspori, Floris van Heijnsbergen, Bart Janssen, Ingrid Meus, Eveline de Munck Mortier, Peter van Keulen, Usha Mahabiersing, Nicoline Koek, Marthe van Eerdt.
HOSPITALITY

Symposium program:
Instant Urbanism: All for the love of Instant Urbanism
Organized with Ana Dzokic and Marc Neelen (STEALTH.unlimited, Rotterdam / Belgrade).
'All for the love of Instant Urbanism' brings together a group of people involved with and troubled by the necessity for a more future oriented instant creation and collectivity in the city. It blends a workshop, performance and discussions with a number of guests on stage, while setting out for the slippery grounds of even newer horizons.
Participants will include: Tor Lindstrand and Mårten Spångberg, International Festival, Stockholm, Emiliano Gandolfi, Cohabitation Strategies, independent curator and architect, Rotterdam, Dubravka Sekulic, Belgrade / Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht, Santiago Cirugeda, Recetas Urbanas, Sevilla.
Hospitality: Hospitality, Privacy, Place
Organized with Dr. Johan Siebers (Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies School of Advanced Study, University of London).
'Hospitality, Privacy, Place' is a two-day workshop that will explore the dialectic between these concepts in the context of the question what it means to build and develop a community that can be a mirror of Europe, both mediating and shaping its course.
Participants will include: Peter Thompson, Sheffield University (concrete utopias), Aneta Krzemien, University of Central Lancashire (public dialogue), Volker Schneider, Speedliner Co. and Ernst Bloch Assoziation, Bochum (concrete utopia, urbanization), Maaike Engelen, London (psychoanalysis as cultural critique).
Accelerated History: Is Time Enough? Duration, Location and Accelerated Histories
Organized with Dr. Paul O'Neill (artist - curator and GWR Research Fellow in Commissioning with Situations, University of the West of England, Bristol).
This strand of the symposium takes a speculative look at how duration and the evolutionary process of time is conceived of as part of new cumulative approaches to artistic, organizational and curatorial praxis in response to a specific locations and contexts. Centered around a series of intense dialogues and in-conversations, this strand aims to unpack key issues relating Durational approaches to Participatory Praxis, Collaboration and Play, Communities and Social Engagement, Organizational Models and Networks, Critical Writing and Pedagogy.
Participants will include: Sally Tallant (Head of Programmes, Serpentine, London) and Jonathan Banks (Chief Executive, ixia – the UK national public art think-tank), curator Sophie Hope (co-founder of curatorial duo B+B, London) and Amsterdam based writer-curator Eva Fotiadi, artists Barbara Holub & Paul Rajakovics (Transparadiso, Vienna), Christoph Schaefer (Park Fiction, Hamburg), Mick Wilson (Dean of GradCam, Dublin), writer and media theorist Ned Rossiter (author of 'Organized Networks'), Basak Senova (curator and designer, Nomad.tv. Istanbul and assistant professor, Kadir Has University ) and Paul O'Neill with a writing workshop on duration led by Maria Fusco (Writer and Director of Art Writing, Goldsmiths, London).
Out of The Blue has been developed by The Blue House and a number of partner institutions including: Locating the Producers - an on-going collaborative research initiative between Situations at the University of the West of England, Bristol, ProjectBase in Cornwall and Dartington College of Arts / University College Falmouth and led by Dr. Paul O'Neill (www.situations.org.uk/research_ltp.html) and ECREA – European Communication Research and Education Association - Philosophy of Communication.

Colaboran:
Centro Cultural de España en México, Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno del distrito Federal, FARO DE ORIENTE, FARO TLÁHUAC, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Casa Talavera, Martes de Arte de Tepito.
Entre otros artistas participan Eder Castillo, Ilana Boltvinik, Arturo Ortiz, Sandra de la Loza, Taniel Morales y Alejandro Rincón. |

In a critical panorama where energetic efficient buildings fail to match contemporary architectural concepts, ars09berlin - the summer academy for architecture, reurbanization and sustainability of the University of Applied Sciences Berlin - offers the opportunity to rethink the existing city under sustainable values. EXPERIMENT TRANSIT is a program aiming the issue of reorganizing and restructuring the urban fabric of the city.
As part of the University of Applied Sciences, where technological research and multidisciplinary working methods are carried out together, technical support from renamed experts on sustainable development field will be offered for the students. A combination of an architectural and urban design studio along with lectures of renowned capacities of the field will set up the frame to create ideas and strategies for the sustainable development of the site.
Urban planers, architects, designers, historians, engineers and critics will bring forth lines of perspective and open up the debate, rethinking the role of energy waste in contemporary design. Speakers like Fritz Reusswig from the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research, Thomas Lechner from Transsolar, Berlin Architects dealing with public interaction like Raumlabor and members of the winning Solar Decathlon team will be part of the team.
The airfield of Tempelhof Airport, inside Berlin's beltway, was shut down in October 2008. The size of the airfield, the economical and demographics situation call for different means of revitalizing this area. The challenge is unprecedented; other redevelopment procedures for the center of Berlin after reunification can't keep up with it and no investor is offering any idea.
As a result, only time appears to be part of the solution. However, in most parts of Berlin, spontaneous urban users have achieved more suitable solutions rather than top-down development could ever accomplish; offering opportunities to individuals taking on their initiative and living their dreams instead of over imposing authoritarian plans.
As a whole method, rather than looking at one solution, we do investigate scenarios. We consider scenarios as tools to explore future – or even different possible futures. This approach allows us to focus on critical uncertainties.
Starting with fieldtrips to explore similar situations and to get familiar with the city of Berlin, this program offers an academic environment for learning in an international context, referencing different cultural backgrounds to new perspectives, fostering intercultural understanding.
This year the summer academy for architecture, reurbanization and sustainability, ars09berlin will take place from May 30th to July 2nd. Due to academic schedules the deadline for applications of international architecture and urban design students is postponed to 15th May. Applicants interested on alternative strategies for the city and reuse of derelict urban sites, open for creative solutions with skills on developing new approaches are highly encouraged to participate.

Convocatoria Décima Bienal de La Habana
INTEGRACIÓN Y RESISTENCIA EN LA ERA GLOBAL
10ma Bienal de La Habana.
Marzo-Abril del 2009
Veinticinco Aniversario |
 |
