The Black Hours

The Black Hours is a photographic essay on women in prison. There, solitude and lesbianism are a means of satisfying affective needs, and self-punishment and suicide attempts cry for help like open wounds on a wrist. Drugs are used to escape reality, maternity and solidarity, while life is circumscribed by watchtowers, guards, bars and timetables. The Black Hours. The exact words for this project came to me as I took a photograph of a prisoner in her cell. She asked me to photograph her as that was her only way of getting out of prison.
